Ukay-Ukay Escapades
October 1, 2008
Hi! Welcome to Ukay-ukay Escapades, a blog where I would share to you my weird/cute/great finds at ukay-ukay shops around the Metro. Yay! *clap clap clap*
To start off, let me tell you the story of my life as a human who wears clothes.
Other people choose my clothes. As a child, I wasn’t the “I want this one!” type of kid. I only wear what everybody hands to me. I didn’t have fashion sense when I was in high school. I had no idea what to wear, what’s in, or what to buy. Most of my clothes are hand-me-downs that unfortunately came from boys (yes, FUBU and Tommy Hilfiger baggy shorts, huge shirts…), and the rest are bad fitting clothes that my Mom bought for me – not that I dislike the clothes that my Mom gave me, but I just realized that most of them are two or more sizes larger than my actual size.
My “fashion turning point” was college. Since we don’t have a uniform in UP, I had to buy clothes that are comfy and would not go out of style in a few months. It was the first time that I actually bought pants that ACTUALLY fit me. I also bought a few shirts – typical shirts.
Later on, I realized that I have to update my wardrobe every now and then. I don’t want to be seen in the same clothes every other day! So taking ideas from my funky block mates, schoolmates, and TV shows such as America’s Next Top Model (and the like), I started to figure out what clothes I would want to wear.
I started to buy nice clothes when my family goes shopping for clothes. I still receive hand-me-downs, but this time, they are girl’s clothes – most of them are collared body fit tops. I bought tops with ruffles, cute designs, and nice colors. I learned that I shouldn’t settle for pants that doesn’t fit me, and that I should take my time whenever I look for clothes. I also bought “immortal” footwear – chucks, heels and slippers.
But one thing that I really wanted was to wear skirts. I had this horrible skin asthma on my legs from elementary to high school, so I was insecure to show my legs to the world. I usually wore high socks in school, and when we have to meet-up during Saturdays, I would always wear pants to hide my legs.
Good thing this skin asthma went away when I entered college. So when I realized that I finally can wear casual skirts, I wanted to have a few nice ones in my closet. Clothes are expensive but I couldn’t ask for money from my parents, so I have to work with my really small allowance.
And there it was – an ukay-ukay shop near UPM. They have tons of random clothes and they’re really, really, really cheap. Who can resist a “20p on all items” signboard?
It’s been two years since my first ukay-ukay buy and here I am today, typing my first post about my escapades.
Have fun reading my blog!
